Psalm 25 Summary

AUTHOR:

  • Psalm 25 was written by David.

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES:

  • No Known New Testament References.

THEMES:

  • God is the true source of wisdom, forgiveness of sins, and deliverance from trials.

DEFINTIONS:

  • Fear of God – In modern vernacular, we use the word “fear” to talk about things that terrify us, often things that we perceive want to do us harm. However, when the Scriptures talk about the “fear of God” it carries a richer meaning. Yes, we should be terrified of what will happen to us if we live in rebellion to God, but the “fear of God” is also to affect those who love Him. In the Bible, fearing the Lord means showing God the respect due to Him for how great He is. It is holding Him in appropriate reverence as a God of love and as a consuming fire (Deuteronomy 4:24).

OUTLINE:

  • SEEKING HELP WITH A HUMBLE HEART (25:1-22):

    • Psalm 25 is a meditation of David in which he reaches out to the Lord for 3 primary things, (1) deliverance from trials, (2) forgiveness of sins, and (3) teaching in the way of righteousness.

    • David was yet again oppressed by enemies, and he asked for God’s help with them.

    • He expressed his confidence that those who put their trust in God would succeed, while those who fought against God would fail. He wanted to be on God’s side.

    • David asked God to teach him His ways. He wanted to know God and walk in the truth of God.

    • Then he asked God not to remember his past sins, but to forgive him, based on God’s great love.

    • He wanted God to pardon him for the Lord’s name’s sake. It was God who would receive the glory for the pardon, it wasn’t a result of David’s goodness.

    • In verse 9, David extoled humility as a virtue necessary for those who want to learn from God. The humble recognized their need for God and prepare their hearts to be taught by him.

    • In verses 12-13, David said God will be the friend of those who fear Him.

    • David concludes the Psalm asking God to consider his struggle and the multitude of his enemies.

    • He put the future of Israel into the hands of God with confidence that God would save His people.

APPLICATION:

  • When David prayed for forgiveness of sin, he asked God to forgive him for His (the Lord’s) name’s sake.

  • When we pray for forgiveness of sin, we should do it in the same way.

  • We don’t ask God to forgive us because we deserve it.

  • We ask God to forgive us because He is full of grace, because Jesus died for us even though we didn’t deserve it.

  • When God forgives us, He shows Himself merciful, which should stimulate us and other to worship.

  • Don’t pray for God to forgive you and then flaunt your righteousness before men as if credit belongs to you.

  • Pray to God for forgiveness and then tell everyone you know that God deserves the credit for saving a wretch like you.

  • In this way, God’s name is made glorious through your forgiveness, it is for His name’s sake.
