Psalm 26 Short Summary:

David wanted the Lord to vindicate him and to show the world that those who trust in God’s salvation are doing the right thing. In Psalm 26, David expressed his trust in God’s grace as his firm foundation. Those who loved evil built their houses on sand, but David’s house would not be swept away, because it was founded on the rock of God.

Psalm 26 Summary

AUTHOR:

  • Psalm 26 is a psalm of David (26:1).

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES:

  • No known New Testament References.

THEMES:

  • God will exalt His faithful ones and show the world that they did the right thing by placing their faith in Him.

DEFINTIONS:

  • Vindication (26:1) – When a person is shown to be right after someone has accused them of being wrong.

OUTLINE:

  • DAVID’S LIFE IN CONTRAST TO WICKED MEN (26:1-7):

    • David wanted God to “vindicate” him in his choice to live according to God’s instructions.

    • David wanted God to show the world that he was right, reasonable, and rational in his choice to reject evil and live a godly life.

    • He kept his distance from “men of falsehood” and hypocrites (26:4).

    • He wrote, “I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked” (26:5).

    • In contrast to keeping company with wicked people, he went in his innocence to the altar of the Lord to offer sacrifices.

    • He worshiped God with thanksgivings and spoke widely of God’s amazing deeds.

  • DAVID’S PRAYER FOR GRACE AND VINDICATION (26:8-12):

    • David expressed his joy in the Lord. He loved God’s house, and he loved the presence of God.

    • He asked the Lord not to “sweep” him away with the evildoers, but to vindicate him, to show the world that those who are on the Lord’s side are making the right choice.

    • In the final verse, he expressed his confidence that God would do this.

    • David knew he stood on “level ground,” he had a sure footing by placing his confidence in God, he would not be swept away.

APPLICATION:

  • God is a rock on which we can build the foundation of our lives.

  • When the storms of life blow through, our house will not be swept away because it has a sturdy foundation.

  • In contrast, people who live without God build their lives on unstable ground.

  • When the storms of life rage, their foundations fall apart.

  • David’s words in psalm 26 bring to mind Jesus’ words in the New Testament.

  • Mat 7:24-27 - “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

  • What kind of foundation are you building your life on?
