Proverbs 11 continues the short proverbs of Solomon that began in chapter 10. Solomon’s proverbs are recorded in Proverbs chapter 10 through chapter 29. These proverbs are typically short and concise statements of wisdom for the medication of the reader.

In Proverbs 10, is a collection of the proverbs (wise sayings) of King Solomon of Israel. Proverbs 10 is often considered the beginning of the second section of the Book of Proverbs. Solomon’s proverbs are recorded in Proverbs chapter 10 through chapter 29.

In Proverbs 9, Solomon puts forward the image of 2 women who prepare two tables for a meal. Lady Wisdom invites men to her table to learn the ways of wisdom and get life. Lady Folly invites men to her table to learn the ways of sin and to throw away their lives.

In Proverbs 8, Solomon personifies the virtue of wisdom as a woman and contrasts her with the adulterous woman of Proverbs 7. Lady Wisdom stands at the gate of her city offering to make fools into wise men if they will embrace her teaching. In a beautiful section of scripture, verses 22-31, Lady Wisdom describes how she was present with the Lord before He created the world.

In Proverbs 7, Solomon encourages his son to embrace wisdom like an intimate friend. Solomon knew that if he could get his son to love wisdom, he would never fall into the trap of making love to a forbidden woman in an adulterous affair. Solomon describes a scene in which a foolish young man is enticed by a married woman, and writes that the young man is unaware that he is being led to her bed like an ox goes to the slaughter.

In Proverbs 6, Solomon offers some practical warnings against unwise behaviors and patterns of life. He warns men not to take on the debts of others, not to be lazy, not to become crooked, and not to commit adultery. He also gives a list of 7 things the Lord hates, these include, (1) Haughty eyes, (2) a lying tongue, (3) hands that shed innocent blood, (4) a heart that devises wicked plans, (5) feet that make haste to run to evil, (6) a false witness who breathes out lies, and (7) a person who sows discord among brothers.

Proverbs 5 is a continuation of Solomon’s discussion of true wisdom. In chapter 5, he makes it clear that a wise man doesn’t get involved with forbidden women. A wise man will not be caught in adultery with a woman who is not his wife, because he knows adultery leads to ruin and shame.

Proverbs 4 is similar to Proverbs 3 in content. Solomon is giving his son wise advice and encouraging him to pursue wisdom. If he is able to obtain wisdom and live by it, his life will be blessed. Wisdom will keep him from swerving off the path of light and righteousness and onto the dark path of the wicked.

Solomon speaks to his son in Proverbs 3 and encourages him to seek wisdom from the Lord. He writes, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” He goes on to speak of the surpassing value of wisdom and the behavior and lifestyle of a man who has obtained it.

In Proverbs 2, Solomon gives advice to his son about pursuing wisdom. He wanted his son to pursue wisdom the way men pursue money. God gives wisdom to those who seek it, and wisdom will be a guide to those who possess it, helping them avoid the temptation presented to them by evil men and women.

Proverbs 1 can be broken down into 3 distinct sections. The first is an introduction to the book and its focus on the virtue of wisdom. The second section is the encouragement of a father to his son not to get entangle with scoundrels and worthless men. In the third section, wisdom is personified as a women offering her blessing to anyone who will put aside their foolishness and simpleness and pursue the knowledge of God, which is the beginning of wisdom.
