  • The author of Psalm 147 is unknown.

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES:

  • No Known New Testament References.

THEMES:

  • Various reasons why God is worthy of worship.

  • God’s special care of the people of Israel.

DEFINITIONS:

  • Lyre (147:7) - A small hand-held stringed instrument with a U-shape. It is similar to the harp in that the musician plucks the strings to create the music.

OUTLINE:

  • A LIST OF REASONS TO PRAISE THE LORD (147:1-20):

    • Psalm 147 is a psalm of worship listing several reasons to praise the Lord.

    • The psalmist wrote that God’s delight is in those who worship Him, those who put their hope in His steadfast love.

    • Some of the reasons for praise that are listed relate directly to Israel and their special relationship with God, but others are more general and applicable to all.

    • I’ve included a selection of the author’s list below:

    • God was to be praised, because He built up the city of Jerusalem and gathers the outcasts of Israel.

    • He strengthened the city and blessed the people within the city walls.

    • He heals the brokenhearted.

    • He created the stars and gave them all names.

    • He elevates the humble and diminishes the wicked.

    • He manages the clouds and the rainfall which give life to the earth.

    • He covers the earth with snow, ice crystals, and cold weather.

    • He feeds the animals that He created.

    • “He makes the wind blow and the waters flow” (147:18).

APPLICATION:

  • The psalmist gives us this list of reasons to worship God.

  • His reasons are very general and apply almost universally.

  • Take 5 minutes today to make yourself a list more specific to yourself.

  • What reasons do you personally have to worship?

  • When I did this, I ended up with around 40 reasons to give thanks and praise.

  • Looking at that list was a reminder that God has been very good to me.

  • It was also a reminder that complaining about little inconveniences is foolish because God has blessed me a lot in the larger and more significant areas of my life.
