Behold the Lamb of God!

lamb tied up at the butcher shop

This morning, Megan and I were leaving the gym and heading to lunch when we passed an unusual sight. Outside the butcher’s shop, a lamb was laying on the ground next to a tree. As we approached, I noticed the lamb’s legs were tied together, the back right leg tied to the front left leg. The poor beast was waving its head around and squirming on the ground to keep a sizeable swarm of flies out of its wool.

It was a sorry sight. The lamb’s fate was not in question. It was only a matter of time before someone struck a deal with the butcher and carried the lamb off to the slaughter.

“Behold, the Lamb of God!”

These were the words John the Baptist used to introduce his disciples to the Jesus. This was the fate Jesus accepted when He came to the world to save sinners.

Yes, Jesus is a conquering King who subjugated the grave and defeated the power of the devil, but His pathway to victory led Him to assume a position like that of this pitiful lamb.

Will you worship the lamb on the sidewalk? Declare Him your king? Pattern your life so your end will be like His? Will you lift Him up even though the world considers Him a symbol of weakness.

How did the Creator of the universe humble Himself to such extreme lows to serve others? The humility required to complete the crucifixion was nothing less than an act of God. We as humans can barely bring ourselves to the level of humility required to serve others. Knowing our own struggle with pride, we should be stunned by the selflessness of Jesus.

Let’s worship Jesus for His victory and for His humility!
