Solomon was king for 40 years according to 1 Kings 11:42, from approximately 1015-975 B.C.
CHARACTERS:
David – The 2nd king of the united kingdom of Judah and Israel.
Solomon – Son of David and the 3rd king of God’s people in the Promised Land.
WHERE:
Solomon’s capital and palace were in Jerusalem.
The Tabernacle was located at Gibeon when Solomon became king.
OUTLINE:
SOLOMON SACRIFICES IN GIBEON (1:1-6):
After David’s death, Solomon took over as king, and God blessed his kingdom.
Solomon visited the Tabernacle, the sacred tent built by Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness.
Although the Tabernacle was in Gibeon, the Ark of the Covenant was no longer there. Remember, David moved the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem in 1 Chronicles 15.
The Ark had been moved but the bronze altar for burnt offerings was still there. Solomon offered 1,000 offerings to the Lord on the altar.
GOD GIVES THE GIFT OF WISDOM TO SOLOMON (1:7-13):
When Solomon was at Gibeon, God appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Ask what I shall give you.”
Solomon asked the Lord for wisdom to lead the nation.
His request pleased God, and God granted him “wisdom and knowledge,” and told him no man on earth would be as wise as him (1 Kings 3:12).
Sense Solomon didn’t ask for money or honor, God promised to give him those things as well.
SOLOMON’S RICHES AND BUSINESS DEALINGS (1:14-17):
In Solomon’s day, “silver and gold were as common in Jerusalem as stone.”
Solomon amassed 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen in Israel.
Solomon was in the business of importing and exporting horses and chariots.
He bought them from the kings of Egypt and Kue, and then sold them at a profit to the Hittite and Syrian kings.
APPLICATION:
God gives us an opportunity to learn from Solomon’s heavenly wisdom.
God saw fit to preserve some of Solomon’s wisdom for future generations. You can read a selection of Solomon’s wise words in the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.
Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings covering a broad rang of topics.
Ecclesiastes is a record of Solomon’s pursuit of meaning and purpose on earth. His pursuit ended with him concluding that God was the only one who could give true value to life.
