Who was Eve in the Bible?
Introduction to Eve in Genesis
Eve was the first woman God created after creating the universe and the earth. She was created shortly after Adam, her husband, was made by God.
You can read about the creation of Adam and Eve in Genesis chapters 1 and 2. God made Adam from the dust (Gen 2:7) and made Eve from one of Adam’s ribs (Gen 2:21-22).
Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden
God made a home for Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They were responsible for taking care of the garden and they were nourished by its produce, including the fruit of the Tree of Life, which allowed them to live forever.
There was only one tree in the garden from which the man and women were not allowed to eat, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Adam and Eve lived in the garden for some time, until one day, a serpent spoke to Eve and tempted her to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The serpent convinced Eve that God was withholding the blessings of the fruit from them. He told Eve she would become like God if she tasted the fruit. Believing the serpent’s lie, Eve ate the fruit and gave some to Adam, who also tasted it.
This disobedience of God’s instructions was the first sin, and it changed the relationship between Adam, Eve, and God. God punished Adam and Eve by banishing them from the Garden of Eden and separating them from the Tree of Life, which meant Adam and Eve would eventually die.
The Introduction of the Problem of Sin
In believing the serpent’s lie. Adam and Eve brought sin into the world and corrupted God’s good creation. The problem of sin and the solution to sin is one of the major themes of the Bible. Sin separates people from God, just as it did to Adam and Eve, and without a remedy for the sin curse, there was no hope for any of Adam and Eve’s equally sinful children.
God was angry with Eve for disobeying Him, but He also gave her a hopeful promise, that one day, one of her descendants would give birth to a man who would crush the head of the serpent (crush the head of Satan). This man, who we know to be Jesus, would fix the sin problem and give hope to humankind once again.
What Happened to Eve After Her Mistake?
Eve and Adam were banished from the Garden of Eden, but God allowed them to live for many years. We don’t know how old Eve was when she died but we know Adam was 930 years old (Gen 5:5). They had many sons and daughters together. Of their children, we know the names of 3 of their sons, Cain, Abel, and Seth.

Why is Eve Important to the Bible Story?
Eve gave life to the entire human family. In Genesis 3:20, Adam calls her “the mother of all living.” In her disobedience to God, she represents all flawed humans who sin against the Lord. But it was also through Eve that God displayed His saving grace, by giving her the promise of the Savior.
