No Known New Testament References.
THEMES:
The world will know the name of God through His people.
All nations of the earth should praise and fear God.
DEFINITIONS:
Fear of God (67:7) – In modern vernacular, we use the word “fear” to talk about things that terrify us, often things that we perceive want to do us harm. However, when the Scriptures talk about the “fear of God” it carries a richer meaning. Yes, we should be terrified of what will happen to us if we live in rebellion to God, but the “fear of God” is also to affect those who love Him. In the Bible, fearing the Lord means showing God the respect due to Him for how great He is. It is holding Him in appropriate reverence as a God of love and as a consuming fire (Deuteronomy 4:24).
Equity (67:4) – Being fair and impartial.
OUTLINE:
GOD’S NAME KNOWN AND PRAISED IN ALL THE EARTH (67:1-7):
The author of Psalm 67 began with a statement very reminiscent of the priestly blessing found in Numbers 6:24-26.
He wrote, “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face to shine upon us.”
The reason the psalmist asked for this blessing is explained in verse 2, it was so that God’s name would be known to others through the blessings that He gave to His people.
It was the psalmist’s hope that all people on earth would worship God.
All nations should rejoice in the fact that God judges the earth, because He judges with equity and fairness.
The psalmist draws his short psalm to a close with an encouragement to all the people of the earth to fear God and praise Him.
APPLICATION:
Why do you pray for blessings and what do you intend to use them for if you receive them.
Some people pray for blessings because they want to live more luxuriously or because they want to flaunt them so other people can see how well-to-do they are.
The psalmist in Psalm 67 wanted God’s blessing so that the people of the world would admire God (67:2).
Its not wrong to pray for blessings, but when you do, have a plan for how you want to use those blessings in living a life for God.
