Psalm 54 Short Summary:
David was repeatedly betrayed by the Ziphites, who reported on his location to murderous King Saul of Israel. In response to this betrayal, David wrote Psalm 54. He calls on God to defeat his enemies for him, and he rejoices in anticipation of his deliverance. He worships God for His faithfulness and for helping him through every trouble.

DEFINITIONS:
Maskil (53:1) – The exact meaning of this term remains unknown. It may have been a musical indicator, telling the musician or performer how the psalm was to be presented. Other people think the term indicates a psalm that was written to impart wisdom.
Freewill Offering (54:6) – Under God’s law for the Israelites, the people were required to make certain sacrifices to God. A freewill offering was a sacrifice made to God that wasn’t required, but that the offeror made of his own free will.
OUTLINE:
*CONTEXT: When David was hiding from King Saul, he was betrayed by the Ziphites twice. In 1 Samuel 23 and 26, the Ziphites reported on David’s location when he was hiding in the wilderness.
THE ZIPHITES BETRAY DAVID TO SAUL (54:1-7):
When the Ziphites betrayed David, he called to the Lord for help and protection.
King Saul wanted to kill David and the Ziphites were spying on him and revealing his location to the king.
David prayed that he would be delivered from these ruthless and godless men.
David couldn’t trust the people around him, but he knew he could trust in God.
“Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life” (54:4).
David was confident that God would deal with his enemies and give them what they deserved.
He was ensured of victory and told the Lord he would offer freewill offerings to Him.
APPLICATION:
One of the great blessings of being a follower of God is that He will always be on your side.
You’ll encounter situations in your life when you can’t trust the people around you, they aren’t interested in your best interest.
You may not always be able to trust your friends.
Some people can’t trust their own family.
But as Christians, we always have someone who can be trusted and who promises to watch out for us.
David knew that God would always be his friend, and if he had no friend but God, he would be alright.
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
Jesus cares about you so much He’ll die for you. If everyone else betrays you and all you have left is Jesus, you have all you’ll every need.
