OUTLINE:
DECLARING THE GOODNESS AND GREATNESS OF GOD (145:1-21):
Psalm 145 is a psalm full of worship. David blessed the Lord for His great power and His kind nature.
David wrote how he meditated on God’s wonderful works and splendor even though he knew God’s greatness could never be fully appreciated.
David wasn’t the only one who admired God. Other men sang of the fame of God’s goodness and righteousness.
The psalmist wrote, “The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” (145:8).
God’s reign, His kingdom, will last forever, and all of God’s saints and all His creation proclaim the glory of the everlasting King.
God is not just glorious and powerful, but also kind. Verses 14-20 speak of His gentleness and care for the needy.
God provides food to the hungry, helps those who stumble, and preserves those who love Him.
“The Lord is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His works” (145:17).
David concludes the psalm by encouraging all people everywhere to worship, saying, “My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless His holy name forever and ever” (145:21).
APPLICATION:
In Psalm 145, David does a good job of balancing something many churches and Christians struggle with.
He balances the glory and greatness of God with the kindness and gentleness of God.
In my experience, this is a balance every Christian must work hard to find. It takes a lifetime of study and putting aside our biases and preconceived ideas to begin to see God properly, with the appropriate balance of His characteristics as they’re presented in the Scriptures.
Some people overemphasize the holiness of God to a fault, making Him out to be an unapproachable deity. Some people overemphasize the approachableness of God to a fault, presenting Him as no more to be respected than one of your peers.
The Bible is where we find the balance between these two extremes. Reading all of what God has said about Himself is our best way to understand Him properly.
Read it all and read it repeatedly.
