God has power to change the earth to bless the righteous or curse the evil.
DEFINITIONS:
Redeemed (107:2) – A person who has been redeemed is someone who has been won back or bought back. In the case of God and His redeemed, God buys back those lost to sin with the blood of Jesus.
OUTLINE:
LET THE REDEEMED WORSHIP THE LORD (107:1-32):
The psalmist of Psalm 107 invited all those who had been redeemed by the Lord to come together and worship.
This psalm is comprised of a number of short sections each describing a person or group of people who had been redeemed/saved by God.
(1) Those lost in the desert without food and water. God saved them and led them to a city with provisions.
(2) Those in prison and in shackles for breaking the commands of the Lord. They disregarded God’s counsel and landed themselves in prison. They were humbled in prison and called out to God. God in His mercy delivered them.
(3) Those who were in any kind of trouble because of their sins. They were afflicted because of their foolish sinful lifestyles. They called out to the Lord and God “healed them, and delivered them from their destruction” (107:20).
(4) Sailers caught in storms. They set sail to their desired port, but the winds and waves were too much for them. When they called out to God and God stilled the storm.
RIVERS TO DESERTS AND DESERTS TO RIVERS (107:33-43):
The last 10 verses of this psalm describe God’s power to change the landscape of the earth at will, depending on whether he chooses to bless it or curse it.
If the land was inhabited by evil people, God could turn their fruitful land into a desert.
If the land was a desert but was inhabited by humble people, God could turn it into a paradise.
The psalmist encouraged any wise person to meditate on these truths and live accordingly.
APPLICATION:
Prison ministry is a good thing!
It often takes receiving the punishment for our actions for us to be humble enough to call out to God for help.
A chapter like this shows us that prison walls don’t stop prayers from reaching God.
God is ready and willing to redeem people who are in prison.
In light of this, if you ever have an opportunity to write cards or visit people in prison, know that that is an honorable work and one worth participating in.
While a prisoner may never be free again on earth, they can be free in Christ, and eventually be free in Heaven.
