Psalm 101 Summary

AUTHOR:

  • Psalm 101 was written by David.

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES:

  • No Known New Testament References.

THEMES:

  • A decision must be made to either embrace evil and spurn good or to love what is good and reject all forms of evil influence.

DEFINITIONS:

  • Integrity (101:2) – Being honest, trustworthy, and true of heart.

OUTLINE:

  • A DECISION TO LIVE AN HONORABLE AND GODLY LIFE (101:1-4):

    • In this psalm David expressed his determination to live a blameless and upright life.

    • He wrote, “I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart” (101:2).

    • He made up his mind to shun evil and to banish the worthless worldly things that caught other men’s attention.

    • Again, He wrote, “A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will know no evil” (101:4).

  • A DECISION TO SUPPORT THE UPRIGHT AND OPPOSE THE EVILDOER (101:5-8):

    • David’s decision to peruse an honorable life extended to his relationships with other people.

    • He resolved to fill his court with trustworthy men and ensure those ministering to him had a good reputation. He had a favorable look towards all the faithful in his land.

    • At the same time, he resolved to fight the slanderers, the arrogant, the deceivers, the liars, and those involved in any kind of iniquity.

APPLICATION:

  • We need to make a conscious decision every day that we are going to be this virtuous man/woman that David described.

  • We need to make it clear to ourselves that this is the person we want to be, this is the person who God wants us to be, and this is the way we are going to respond to good and evil.

  • The opposite of making this conscious decision is to allow yourself to stumble through your day with the mindset of “well I guess I’ll respond according to how I feel in the moment.”

  • That’s a sure way to lose a battle in the spiritual warfare around you.

  • Does a soldier stumble out on the battlefield without a plan?

  • Some Christians wake up with the thought, “Well, I hope I do better today than I did yesterday” but that hope is as far as their preparation goes.

  • No one accidentally stumbles their way into stalwart resolve to love good and hate evil. That’s a decision you have to consciously make every morning.

  • The lifestyle David described is one that can only be lived by an individual who has intentionally prepared his heart, his mind, and his resolve to live it.

  • Christians don’t stumble through life, they walk intentionally into it with their guard up and their mind trained for the battle by Jesus.
