Proverbs 27 Summary

BREAKDOWN OF PROVERBS - CHART

DEFINITIONS:

  • Profuse (27:6) – Pouring out an abundance of something; distributing liberally.

  • Sheol and Abaddon (27:20) - These terms signify the underworld and the spiritual powers that are present there.

HIGHLIGHTED PROVERBS:

  • PROVERB #1:

    • Proverbs 27:1 – “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

    • Don’t speak in definite terms about what you’ll be doing tomorrow, as if nothing can alter your plans.

    • We control very little about the world in which we live. On any given day, we are surrounded by variables we have no power to affect.

    • Because of that, it’s presumptuous of us to talk about the future as if we know what’s going to happen with certainty.

    • Only God truly knows what we will be doing tomorrow. That truth should keep us humble and prevent us from boasting about what the future holds for us.

    • James 4:13-15 – “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit” – yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

  • PROVERB #2:

    • Proverbs 27:17 – “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”

    • Iron tools are used to sharpen iron blades. It is the same with humans.

    • A godly friend will challenge you, keep you accountable, speak wisdom to you when you lose your head, calm you down when you lose your temper, give you a second perspective, encourage you, and will keep you close to God.

    • A man without a friend receives none of those blessings.

    • A man with a godly friend will be better for it, sharper and wiser than he would have been otherwise.

  • PROVERB #3:

    • Proverbs 27:21 – The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.

    • Silver and gold are tested in the heat of an oven. Fire proves whether they are pure or not.

    • Men are tested by the praise they receive. The way they accept it, and the effect it has on them exposes who they really are.

    • A vain man will crave it, a proud man will take it to heart and become even more proud, a weak man will be inflated by it, but a wise man will return it back to God.

    • Receiving the praise and admiration of men is a dangerous thing. It has been the downfall of countless throughout history, and very few men handle it well.

    • We always need to remember that God is the one who should be worshipped, not us.
