Proverbs 19 Summary
BREAKDOWN OF PROVERBS - CHART
DEFINITIONS:
Prudence (19:14) – Acting carefully; moving through life cautiously and thoughtfully.
Sluggard (19:24) – A lazy person who is slow to do their work.
Scoffer (19:25) - A Mocker; Someone who makes fun of something or someone.
HIGHLIGHTED PROVERBS:
PROVERB #1:
Proverbs 19:3 – “When a man’s folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the Lord.”
Foolish men get themselves into trouble by their own actions, but rather than accepting the responsibility, they look for someone else to blame.
Many fools blame God when they get themselves into trouble.
They say, “God how could you let this happen to me?”
They cry, “God why did you make me this way?”
If a fool gets into trouble, its because he chose not to listen to God in the first place. He shouldn’t be blaming God, he should be repenting, accepting his guilt, and asking God to change his foolish heart.
PROVERB #2
Proverbs 19:14 – “House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.”
Wealth can be passed down from generation to generation, your parents can give it to you, but you don’t get a wife that way.
A man has to go looking for a wife, and a prudent wife is hard to find.
If a man succeeds in finding such a woman, its because the Lord brought her to him.
All men who are married to wise women, don’t forget to thank God for your wife!
PROVERB #3:
Proverbs 19:17 – “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deeds.”
When you give money away, you don’t always know the outcome of your generosity.
Will the person use it wisely? Will they waste it? Will they ever pay the money back?
We can’t always know the answers to those questions, but this verse reassures us that God always takes note of our generosity, and He will reward us for it.
Being generous to a needy person is like lending money to God. God doesn’t forget His commitments, and He won’t forget our kindness. What we give, God will give back to us, so give generously!
PROVERB #4
Proverbs 19:19 – “A man of great wrath will pay the penalty, for if you deliver him, you will only have to do it again.”
You can get an angry man out of trouble, but if he doesn’t get his temper under control, it won’t be long until he finds himself in more trouble.
As followers of Jesus, we need to be very careful about our tempers. Anger very rarely produces holy actions.
James writes, “Know this my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:20).
If fits of rage are causing repeated problems in your life, you can patch up the problems as they arise, but the way to prevent the problems from arising in the first place is to ask God to help you get your anger under control.
