Matthew 9 Summary - Quick Bible Study
MATTHEW 9 SUMMARY IN 5 MINUTES
WHEN:
The birth of Jesus probably occurred around 4 B.C..
From Luke 3:23, we know Jesus began His ministry when He was about 30 years old.
This would place the events of Jesus’ ministry roughly between 26-31 A.D..
CHARACTERS:
Jesus - The Messiah. The Son of God who came to save the world from sin.
Paralyzed Man - A man in Capernaum who was brought to Jesus for healing.
Matthew - Also known as Levi, a tax collector who Jesus called to follow Him.
John’s Disciples - Followers of John the Baptist who had a question for Jesus.
Ruler’s Daughter - A girl who Jesus raised from the dead.
Woman with an Issue of Blood - She was healed after touching Jesus’ garment.
Two Blind Men - They cried out to Jesus for help and He healed them.
Mute Man - This man was mute (couldn’t speak) as a result of demon possession.
WHERE:
The events of the first 34 verses all occurred in-and-around the city of Capernaum.
The last 4 verses describe Jesus travelling through “cities and villages,” but we aren’t told which cities and villages specifically.
OUTLINE:
A PARALYZED MAN HEALED (9:1-9:8):
Leaving the Gadarenes, Jesus sailed back to Capernaum.
A paralyzed man was brought to Him for healing.
He said to the man, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”
For claiming to have the power to forgive sins, the scribes accused Jesus of blaspheming.
Jesus proved He hadn’t blasphemed by healing the paralyzed man.
MATTHEW (LEVI) IS CALLED TO FOLLOW JESUS (9:9-9:13):
Jesus found Matthew sitting at a tax book and told him to follow Him.
Matthew invited Jesus to his house along with other “tax collectors and sinners.”
The Pharisees ridiculed Jesus for keeping company with sinners.
Jesus told them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”
THE PARABLES OF THE WINESKIN AND THE GARMENT (9:14-9:17):
A few of John’s followers asked Jesus why His disciples didn’t fast.
Jesus told them it would be inappropriate while He was with them on earth.
He then gave them 2 parables to illustrate the point, the parable of the wineskin and the parable of the garment.
JESUS PERFORMS VARIOUS MIRACLES (9:18-9:34):
A “ruler” notified Jesus his daughter had died and asked Jesus for help.
On the way, He healed a woman who had had a discharge of blood 12 years.
When He got to the ruler’s house, He raised the girl from the dead.
Passing on from there, Jesus healed two blind men.
Finally, He healed a mute man who was afflicted by a demon.
JESUS VISITS TOWNS AND VILLAGES PREACHING AND HEALING (9:35-9:38):
Jesus went from town to town teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven.
He was moved with compassion towards the people He met.
He told His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
BIG PICTURE:
Sickness, suffering, and death entered the world as a result of sin.
Jesus proved He had power to reverse the negative side effects of sin.
This is good news for everyone, because it ensures us Jesus has the power fix what’s wrong with the world.
APPLICATION:
As Jesus expressed in verse 37, there is so much work to be done, but few people who are willing to do it.
That was true in Jesus’ day, but I believe the statement is still true in our generation.
There are so many people in need, both physically and spiritually.
Are we laboring to meet those needs? Or are we distracted by unimportant things?
