Matthew 7 Summary - Quick Bible Study
MATTHEW 7 SUMMARY IN 5 MINUTES
WHEN:
The birth of Jesus probably occurred around 4 B.C..
From Luke 3:23, we know Jesus began His ministry when He was about 30 years old.
This would place the events of Jesus’ ministry roughly between 26-31 A.D..
CHARACTERS:
Jesus - The Messiah. The Son of God who came to save the world from sin.
Disciples - Men and women who followed Jesus and respected His teachings.
WHERE:
We aren’t told the specific mountain on which these words were spoken.
There is a tradition that the Sermon on the Mount was delivered on what has come to be known as the Mount of the Beatitudes, which sits just northwest of the Sea of Galilee.
OUTLINE: THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT (MATTHEW 5-7)
JUDGING OTHERS (7:1-7:6):
Jesus warned His disciples about judging people for their mistakes.
He advised them not to be hypocritical in their condemnations of others.
“...First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.”
GOD GIVES TO THOSE WHO ASK (7:7-7:11):
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
If earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more our heavenly Father?
DO TO OTHERS AS YOU WANT THEM TO DO TO YOU, THE GOLDEN RULE (7:12):
ENTER AT THE NARROW GATE (7:13-14):
The gate leading to eternal destruction is wide and the way is easy.
The gate leading to eternal life is narrow and the way is hard.
A TREE AND ITS FRUITS (7:15-7:20):
Wicked men can be identified by their “fruits.”
Good trees don’t produce bad fruit.
Diseased trees bear bad fruit.
NOT EVERYONE WHO CONFESSES JESUS WILL ENTER HEAVEN (7:21-7:23):
THE HOUSE BUILT ON A ROCK (7:24-27):
The person who heard Jesus’ words and followed them was like a wise man who built his house on a foundation of rock.
The person who heard Jesus’ words and didn’t followed them was like a foolish man who built his house on a foundation of sand.
When the floods and winds came, the foolish man’s house was destroyed, but the wise man’s house remained.
THE PEOPLE’S RESPONSE TO THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT (7:28-7:29):
Jesus’ audience was amazed when He concluded His teaching.
He taught with mastery and authority (unlike their scribes).
BIG PICTURE:
This “sermon” is one of the longest teachings of Jesus recorded in the Bible.
Most of the principles are easily understood, and Jesus’ illustrations are not complex.
Jesus’ goal wasn’t to show off His vocabulary or to have people admire Him for His eloquence (compare this to many modern preachers).
Jesus taught with clarity and simplicity so all men could know God’s will.
APPLICATION:
Jesus had a remarkable way of saying a lot with very few words.
The “Golden Rule” is a very short, easy to understand statement, but if it was properly applied, a huge number of the world’s problems would be resolved.
Take some time to dwell on what the world would look like if everyone treated others the way they wanted to be treated.
Make sure to do your best today to apply this teaching.
