Joshua 17 Summary - 5 Minute Bible Study
Joshua 17 Summary - A Quick Overview
WHEN:
Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land began around 1450 B.C. and lasted approximately 5-7 years.
CHARACTERS:
Joshua - Moses’ assistant while he led the people in the wilderness. God selected Joshua to lead the Israelites into Canaan after Moses’ death.
Tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh – Descendants of Ephraim and Manasseh, the two sons of Joseph.
Eleazar – High Priest of Israel. He became High Priest after the death of his father, Aaron.
WHERE:
The Israelites were camped at Gilgal (14:6).
Joshua 16-17 describe the land allotted to the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh west of Jordan.
OUTLINE:
THE LAND ALLOTTED TO EPHRAIM AND MANASSEH CONTINUED (17:1-18):
Joshua 17 picks up where Joshua 16 left off, describing the borders of the land given to the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim.
Land was allotted to all the people of Manasseh including the daughters of Zelophahad who Moses promised would inherit land in their father’s name (because there was no male heir in the family; Num 27).
Again, as in Joshua 16, the text makes mention of the Israel’s neglect to drive out the inhabitants of the land. They made some of the Canaanites their slaves and allowed them to live amongst them (17:12-13).
