Genesis 2 Summary - 5 Minute Bible Study
WHEN:
Genesis chapter 2 gives us additional insights into the creation of the world which we discussed in chapter 1. God’s creation of our world occurred at the beginning of time as we know it.
CHARACTERS:
God - The Creator of the universe, earth, animals, man, and woman.
The First Man (Adam) – God created man from the dust of the ground.
The First Woman (Eve) – God created woman from a rib taken from the man.
WHERE:
God created the first man and woman and put them in a garden in the east of Eden (2:8). No one knows for sure where God planted this garden. Our best hint is the names of the 4 rivers that flowed from Eden: the Pishon, the Gihon, the Tigris, and the Euphrates (2:10-14).
OUTLINE:
DAY 7 (2:1-3):
After finishing His creation in 6 days, God rested on the 7th.
God blessed the 7th day and made it holy.
THE CREATION OF MAN (2:4-7):
Chapter 2 gives us more details about how God created men and women.
Man was created from the dust of the ground and God gave him a soul by breathing life into his nostrils.
THE GARDEN OF EDEN (2:8-17):
God planted a garden in the east in Eden and put the man in it.
God caused all kinds of trees to grow in the garden.
He put two special trees in the middle of the garden, the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Four rivers flowed out of Eden and watered the garden, the Pishon, the Gihon, the Tigris, and the Euphrates.
God told the man he could eat from every tree in the garden except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
THE CREATION OF WOMAN AND THE NAMING OF THE ANIMALS (2:18-25):
God saw that the man was alone and decided he needed a companion.
All of the animals were brought to the man and he named each of them, but none of the animals were a suitable companion for him.
So God caused the man to fall asleep, and while he slept God took one of his ribs and formed a woman.
The woman was the perfect companion for the man.
God designed men and women to leave their parents and to be joined to a companion as “one flesh.”
The man and woman were naked in the garden and they “were not ashamed.”
APPLICATION:
God created the union between man and woman.
A man is the perfect companion for a woman and visa-versa, according to our Creator.
Marriage is an institution designed and defined by God.
It is not a man-made institution that can be redefined by laws or popular opinion.
