OUTLINE:
GOD TELLS MOSES ABOUT THE FINAL PLAGUE (11:1-11):
God told Moses He would bring one final plague on Egypt, after which, Pharaoh would drive the people of Israel out of Egypt forever.
The Israelites were to go to their Egyptian neighbors and ask them for silver and gold before they left.
The Lord made the Hebrews favorable in the eyes of the Egyptians and they granted their requests.
Then Moses described the final plague to the people.
Around midnight, God would enter Egypt and kill every firstborn of humans and animals.
No exceptions would be made based on social rank, the firstborn of the servants would die, and the firstborn of Pharaoh would die (4:23).
The Egyptians would suffer and lament as they never had before, but the plague would not destroy the firstborn of the Hebrews.
After the plague, the Egyptians would beg the Israelites to leave.
After prophesying these events, Moses went out from “Pharaoh in hot anger.”
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”
Moses and Aaron obeyed the Lord’s commands and the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart.
APPLICATION:
This conflict between the Israelites and the Egyptians patterns the larger conflict between God and Satan today.
Egypt was ruled by an evil and powerful king who enslaved people to his will.
God delivered His people from slavery with the strength of Heaven in order to lead them to a promised land (Canaan).
Satan is a wicked and powerful prince (Ephesians 2:2) who enslaves people under the power of sin.
God (Jesus) came to deliver His people by the power of heaven, to free us from the wicked one and lead us to our promised land (Heaven).
