Acts 3 in 5 Minutes
WHEN:
The events of Acts 3 occurred in approximately 30 AD.
CHARACTERS:
Peter – An Apostle, the brother of Andrew.
John – An Apostle, the brother of James.
Lame Man – A man who couldn’t walk who sat at the Temple every day asking for alms.
Crowd of Jews – After witnessing a miracle, a group of Jews gathered around Peter and John.
WHERE:
The events of chapter 3 occurred in Jerusalem, specifically at the Temple.
OUTLINE:
- PETER AND JOHN HEAL A LAME MAN (3:1-10):
John and Peter visited the Temple and a lame beggar asked them for charity.
Peter told him they didn’t have any money but would give him something better.
Peter healed the man’s legs in the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
The man went leaping and worshipping into the Temple and was recognized by many of the Jews who frequented the Temple.
PETER PREACHES TO A CROWD IN THE TEMPLE (3:11-26):
Those who witnessed the miracles were astonished and many of them gathered around Peter and John.
Peter told the people the power they had just witnessed was not his but that of Jesus, the Christ, who they had recently rejected and killed on the cross.
The people killed Jesus because of their ignorance, but in doing so, they fulfilled the word’s of the prophets that the Christ would suffer.
Peter told the people to repent so their sins could be “blotted out.”
He told them Moses had prophesied about the Messiah in Deuteronomy 18:18-19.
He told them Jesus was the fulfillment of the promise God made to Abraham that in his offspring all the nations of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 22:18).
Jesus was the blessing all the Jews didn’t know they needed; Peter helped them understand by connecting Jesus’ life to the ancient promises of God.
APPLICATION:
Our service for God is for God’s glory, not ours.
Peter shows that he understood this when he deflected the attention he received on to Jesus.
When we receive attention for doing something good in our Christian walk, we need to use it as an opportunity to point people to Jesus.
Don’t use your good works to steal glory from God.
We are God’s servants, bought by the blood of Jesus, and we don’t have anything to boast about, other than the greatness of the God who saved us!
